Description |
Large painting of the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus is hanging on a cross, with his wrists and feet nailed to the cross. Lacerations and streams of blood are visible across his mostly naked body. He wears a crown of thorns, and his eyes are swollen. He wears a dark cloth around his groin. He is looking down toward the crowd of onlookers. A skull discreetly sits at the base of the cross on the left side, positioned on top of a wall or pile of gray stones. Five other people are standing at the foot of the cross watching the crucifixion: two men on the far left; two women in the center; and a Roman soldier on the right, holding a spear in his right hand and looking down on the four others who appear to be mourning Jesus' death. Behind the crucifixion are many other details, including a grassy landscape, six trees, a stone building, ominous and darkly colored hills or mountains. The sky is starkly colored in hues of black, green, and blue. White and gray clouds are positioned in the sky, and rain falls below them. The artist's signature is positioned between the rightmost woman and the Roman soldier. |
