Description |
This painting depicts a building, the former Church of the Savior in Rybinsk, Russia. The building is depicted in gray-tones gouache and surrounded by green trees with the raw red-orange color of the inner birch bark is visible in the background. There are four towers on the church topped with golden onion-shaped domes and crosses. The building is outlined in tusche, a black greasy material that can be used as ink. On the back of this painting are notes in Cyrillic script. It translates as: "Rybinsk From a photograph 1902 - 1908 yrs. Ivanovskaya St. Church of the Savior. Was built in 1868 yr. Did not survive into our time." The back also has a list of materials: "birch bark, gouache, tushe, gel, lacquer" Birch trees are very important to Russian culture. It is the national tree and its bark has historically served as a writing medium before paper and its sap as a curative. It has also functioned as protection against evil spirits. |
