Description |
This untitled framed triptych by Sammie L. Nicely features three ceramic tribal mask or abstracted mask-like faces. The three masks are comprised of a palette of muted grays, blues, and whites, making for a harmonious color scheme. Their foreheads are decorated with buttons, beads, small jewels, and accessories. The masks' mouths are open slightly. The eyes are 3D circles or ovals with holes in the center. Each nose is a straight rectangular rope of clay connecting up to the forehead. Nicely is fondly remembered for having created works in a variety of media. His pit-fired ceramic masks fuse Native American and African art traditions and techniques to create visual images inspired by ritual and everyday life. |
