This print entitled "St. Basile célébrant le sacrifice de la messe" (St. Basil Celebrating the Sacrifice of the Mass [The Celebration of the Holy Mysteries]) is plate 12 from "Les Tableaux de Rome, Les Eglises Jubilaires" (Pictures of Rome, The Churches of Jubilee) by Jacques Callot. It depicts a religious ceremony from the 4th century lead by Basil of Caesarea. The image has an embossed border in the shape of an arch, like the structure of a church or temple. At the bottom of the print is text that reads: "I. Callor fecir." Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker from the Duchy of Lorraine. He is an important person in the development of the old master print. He made more than 1,400 etchings chronicling the period, featuring soldiers, clowns, drunkards, beggars, and courts. He also etched many religious and military images, and several prints featured extensive landscapes in their background. |
