Description |
This textile construction or wall hanging was hand-quilted and hand-stitched by Nervie Powers of Clairfield, Tennessee, likely in the 1960s or 1970s. The textile construction depicts a feminine figure quilting while seated in a chair in a field of green grass with colorful flowers. The chair is navy blue, and a black flower is sprouting from the top of the chair. The woman has black hair on the top of her head, and she is wearing a black, white, and yellow patterned dress with matching yellow boots. The quilt she is quilting is made of two different fabrics. The first fabric is a purple print with a green and white background. The second fabric features a checkered pattern with blue with white dots alternating with a red floral print with green stems. The woman is quilting with red thread. There are various hand-embroidered red, orange, yellow, and pink flowers surrounding the quilting woman, and there are two pink flowers placed in the uppermost corners of the textile construction. There are narrow, threaded stripes in shades of black, green, and orange that create supporting horizontal and vertical borders around the quilting woman. There are also arched, narrow, threaded curves in the uppermost corners of the textile construction that encircle the aforementioned pink flowers. The textile construction features a narrow rod pocket and a small wooden dowel rod at the top for hanging. The artist, Nervie Powers, signed the back of the piece in the lower right corner. In donating her collected works by Ethel King and Nervie Powers (2023.008.002-005), Margaret Gregg remarked: "The energy and goodness of my mountain ladies lives on." |
