There are three metal letters, "I O R," and a shield positioned below the embroidered portion. The shield features eight metal points, an "S" center medallion, and a hanging metal ball. There is a blue silk rosetta immediately underneath the shield. The bottom of the sash features two rows of metal fringe. There is a metal rosetta holding the sash together nine inches above the fringe. The Independent Order of Rechabites is a fraternal organization and friendly society founded in England in 1835 as part of the nineteenth century temperance movement. Members signed a total abstinence pledge and could achieve three degrees: Knight of Temperance, Knight of Fortitude, and Covenanted Knight of Justice. The United States branch of the IOR was established in 1842. |
