Description |
"Compassion" is a mixed media fiber piece inlaid a black wooden shadow box. Red, yellow-orange, and purple textile swatches are stitched together and suspended in the box by white threads. Mounted on stitched fabrics is a tiny book with a base made of cardboard on which purple felt is applied. Also appliqued: a crochet strip on the upper left corner; a pink fiber flower on the upper left; sequins on the upper middle; and yellow beads on the upper right. The cover of the book reads: "What lies behind us and what lies before us is nothing compared to what lies within us." This appears to be a variation of the quotes from essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson that says: "What lies behind us, and what lies before us are but tiny matters compared to what lies within us." The back has a quote by Hubert Van Feller: "Compassion is not just an exhibition of pity; it is a virtue in the strict sense of being a habit. Compassion is suffering: constant willingness to share in the sufferings of others." |
