Artist: "The Wake" is a painting that reflects upon the experience of danger, turmoil, or loss, and the redemptive act of fleeing. Conceptually, this painting explores the idea of "the wake" from several different angles. Firstly, our protagonist and heroine experiences an awakening which leads to her escape. Next, she traverses an ocean-like landscape leaving in her wake that from which she flees. Finally, the painting references the concept of a ceremonial wake in mourning for that left behind, or irrevocably lost. The global pandemic of 2020 has forced many of us to reevaluate our own personal lives and our inner states. The silences of our lives as well as the turmoil, danger, or disharmony have been amplified by our experiences of social distancing, quarantine, isolation, and loss. The layers of suffering caused by the global pandemic are manifold, from the loss of lives and livelihoods to the increased instances of domestic violence and the intensified suffering due to mental illness. Many of us have experienced the pandemic as a time of awakening in which we seek to renew ourselves and our lives. Others have experienced unimaginable loss from which they must overcome. Ultimately "The Wake" represents hope, resilience, renewal, and transcendence. |
