Description |
Artist: This painting represents the initial panic and sense of desperation one feels upon being displaced. Personally it represents how I felt at being displaced from my school community and studios and from losing opportunities that I had been working toward for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a painting that was completed a few weeks after the initial stay at home orders. I had been working with several images to try and represent the fear and loss I was experiencing and it wasn't until I turned to the gestural energy of abstraction that I felt I was communicating effectively. The anxiety that the world has been processing and the lack of a concrete hope or clear plan translates into the brushstrokes and suggested forms of my painting. It is a large scale work because anxiety and fear are bodily experiences and I wanted to use the space for both small, intimate moments and grand ones. I wanted room for my body to communicate. |
