Description |
This quilted textile has screenprinted outline portraits, a church, and text over a background of red and blue tones. It depicts the Bethel Christian Church (1859) in Jonesborough, Tennessee, a historically Black church. It was commissioned by the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services as part of Tennessee Homecoming 1986. This quilt features purple, red, dark teal, pink and maroon hues. The quilt also features six faces and a church in black fabric. The quilt has multiple screenprinted images including information about Hezekiah Hankal. The screenprinted images need to be handled with care, as they can be worn easily. The text includes lines from hymns: Ever to rejoice. To sing forever his saving grace. I've learned how to lean and depend on Jesus. The joy that I have, the world didn't give. I've got a new shout. |
