Description |
"Mystery of Hope" is an oil painting on canvas framed by a thick wooden frame. The painting portrays a centered, front-facing portrait of a woman who is wearing a faint smile. As with many of Preble's portraits, "Mystery of Hope" depicts a Creole girl with green eyes. The backdrop is a muted and soft blue color. The subject is adorned with feather-like gold earrings and a simple thin gold necklace. Her hair is dark and extends to the edge of the frame. The smoothed and blended treatment of the paint softens and rounds the subject's features. The artist's signature is visible in the lower left corner as "JPREBLE." This painting belonged in Sammie L. Nicely's personal collection of artworks before it was bequeathed to the Reece Museum by Nicely's estate in 2021. |
