Description |
"Birdcage" by Lydia Wilson is an assemblage or mixed-media sculpture comprising plastic, fabric, paint, and found objects. This sculpture depicts a gray-haired doll wearing a hat and a ball gown of which the skirt is split open in the front revealing a bird cage underneath. The cage houses a booklet featuring handwritten text, washes of paint, and drawings. The "Birdcage" doll was created when Lydia Wilson was doing a program with women who were processing trauma. A booklet inside the cage instructs the viewer on how to use the doll. Hanging threads with words on them are positioned behind the doll once the corresponding emotion has been addressed, or is behind the person. Objects or pieces of paper can be placed inside the cage to represent leaving trauma with the doll. |
