This black felt "Hillbilly Hat" hat was merchandise for Mountain Dew (beverage) from the 1950s to the 1960s. These hats came with a feather and corn cob pipe that could slip into holes in the side of the hat. The feather is from an American wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), and it was painted red. The corn cob pipe has a plastic tube as the mouthpiece. The front of the hat has a patch with the image of "Willy the Hillbilly" shooting a cork through his hat with the words "Drink Mountain Dew." The back of the hat has two red and yellow 'patches' attached. There is a hole in the top of the hat. The brim has fallen and became wavy. These hats were available in various colors and sizes. a. hat b. feather c. pipe |
