Description |
This is a print with an illustration and description of Primitive Baptist Church in Cades Cove. The painting, and presumably, the written text, is by Carroll Shope. The print features a reddish-brown color palette that is accentuated by forestry in the background and gravestones in the foreground. The central object of the illustration is the one-room, white, wooden Primitive Baptist Church. This Church is a staple for Cades Cove / Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitors. The descriptive text is divided into three paragraphs and reads: "The churches of the Great Smoky Mountains provided a source of strength and community to the early settlers. Here, families and friends shared joys and sorrows. This print provides a nostalgic view of the Primitive Baptist Church in Cades Cove. The sparkling white of the wooden church is highlighted by the deepening shadows in the mountain churchyard. Ancestors of the artist, Carroll Shope, settled the Tennessee / North Carolina mountain range over two hundred years ago. The artist's works communicate his deep understanding of the heritage of his native home." |
