Description |
This quilt depicts orange tulips with deep green stems and white details. The pattern is called "The Tulips." It is inferred to have been crafted during the early twentieth century, likely between 1910 and 1935. The quilt's details were constructed using hand-pieced, hand-appliqued, and hand-quilted techniques. There are 5 columns and 6 rows of orange tulips on the quilt that are separated by orange lines. There are green squares where the orange lines overlap. The orange tulips each have a green stem and two leaves. There is an orange border lining the quilt. The quilt features a long lozenge shape in its sashing areas. There are three diagonal lines in the corner stops that reach to the tulip shape. There is a single echo shape surrounding each tulip to provide dimension and texture. Appliqued tulip variations as quilt patterns were popular beginning in the Reconstruction Era, c. 1870s. Similarly, chrome-dyed fabrics that provided vibrant oranges, greens, and reds were also most common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, prior to the transition toward more muted fabrics during the Depression Era of quiltmaking (1925-1950s). Non-patchwork quilts like this one were often not intended for utilitarian use. Instead, applique and/or evenly patterned quilts were used for special occasions (like weddings) or home visits from guests. Many were stored well and never used at all, aiding in the preservation of such quilts over the course of decades. |
