Description |
This soft sculpture was handmade by Reverend Jimmy Morrow. It appears to either be a self-portrait of sorts, or possibly a historic representation of banner-wearing, serpent-handling Christians in the Appalachian region, which is a common motif in the artworks of Reverend Morrow. The body of the doll seems to be primarily made by wire, which is not visible to the viewer. The doll is fully clothed and detailed with paint. Starting from the top, the long, brown hair of the doll appears to be made from synthetic fur. The hair is pulled back into a low ponytail, with red yarn braided into the ponytail. The exposed "skin" of the doll, which is only visible on the face and hands, is a gray, knitted fabric, likely cotton, that is stuffed to provide depth and texture. The fabric is cinched and sewn to create the nose; the eyebrows are sewn using dark brown yarn; the eyes are painted white and light green; and the mouth is painted in red, curved upward in a smile. The body of the doll is dressed in a long, dark green dress or garment that appears to be made from a cotton gauze-like fabric. There are three layered ruffles on the sleeve cuffs and near the bottom hemline. A tasseled "necklace"/accessory with two beads on each tassel is wrapped around the neck and matches the color of the long garment. Layered on top of the long garment, the doll is also wearing a black, sleeveless banner that is knee-length and loosely cinched at the bottom with dark yarn. "Jesus Name Acts 2:38" is painted in white on the front of the banner, matching the banners that were worn by Reverend Morrow and are often featured in his paintings. The doll is wearing denim pants that are almost entirely covered by the long garment. The doll is also wearing handsewn faux-suede brown boots with leather soles. The doll includes a handsewn and handpainted yellow rattlesnake, which is to be worn around the doll's neck. The serpent features distinct black markings and a white underbelly. |
