This burlap crossbody bag with hand-quilted and hand-stitched details was crafted by Ethel King of Clairfield, Tennessee, likely in the 1960s or 1970s. Ethel's details were added to the face of the bag, depicting a feminine figure comprised of vibrant colors. Her hair is outlined with hot pink thread, which also details a middle part along the scalp area. She also has a hair part in the middle of her hair done in pink string. Her hair is comprised of quilted fabric with a pattern of alternating vertical stripes in bright blue, pink, and yellow. There is an orange flower in her hair comprised of orange string. The woman's face is comprised of quilted green fabric. She has blue eyes, and the outline of her eyes is black. She has two layers of eyelashes as well as eyebrows. Her outlined nose was stitched using orange thread. Her lips were stitched using red thread. The lower border of her face is outlined with dark green thread. She is wearing a blue shirt comprised of quilted fabric that is outlined with blue thread. The crossbody strap is a matching burlap and is sewed on. In donating her collected works by Ethel King and Nervie Powers (2023.008.002-005), Margaret Gregg remarked: "The energy and goodness of my mountain ladies lives on." |
