Description |
This off-white dress with a bustle and train was the 1885 wedding dress of Ida Eisemann, née Gump (1863-1922). Fake flowers sit above the chest on the wearer's left hand side. The dress is one piece, with the front skirt, back skirt, and bodice pieces attached. The front of the bodice has been let out at some point, and the holes where the buttons were previously can be seen on the left side of the chest. The crocheted lace on the chest was likely a later addition as well to hide the new panel. Lace at the collar and sleeves is likely older and hand-tatted. The bodice is a darker ivory color, mostly fine wool. The over skirt is a fine linen-wool blend in a linen color. It is partially see-through, showing the dark brown color of the lining. The pleated 'underskirt' peeking out the front is a soft cream color satin silk. The dust ruffle underneath the skirt is a gray and white linen lace. The skirt is lined with a woven linen as well. The fake flowers, orange blossom buds, are likely made of wire and wax or wax covered silk. These flowers match the bridal wreath, 1982.010.003. There is a satin silk loop pinned to the back of the train, off center to the wearer's leftside, which is a wrist strap for holding up the train while walking. The wearer would have worn a chemise and drawers or a 'combination' undergarment as the first layer. A corset would go on top of the chemise or combination. Then a corset cover would complete the undergarments for the bodice. Layers of petticoats and a bustle pad would add fullness to the skirt. There are no maker's tags inside the dress, but it was likely bought or commissioned rather than homemade. The Gump family is remembered for their significant contributions to Jewish life and culture in the Tri-Cities (Bristol/Kingsport/Johnson City, TN). |
