Description |
This framed black and white portrait captures a seated woman who appears to be dressed in early 20th century clothing. She is wearing a darkly colored cloche hat, a vertically pinstriped dress with a bow at the collar, a long jacket in a dark hue with a fur collar, and what appears to be ballerina flats with an attached ankle strap. She is sitting with her left elbow positioned on a nearby wooden side table. She's using a candlestick rotary phone—the base sits on the table while she holds the earpiece to her left ear. Her right arm is sitting across her lap, with her right hand sitting gently on the left armrest of the wooden chair she is sitting in. The portrait sits within oval bubble glass with a brown plaster frame. The photograph's almost drawing-like quality comes from the small underexposed image being enlarged and detailed with crayons, called a crayon enlargement or pastel portrait. The details in the portrait's background are difficult to decipher, aside from the fact that she appears to be indoors, perhaps in a photography studio. The border of the portrait and many of the portrait's features are blurred. This portrait was collected by Dr. Jerome Wright, who donated artifacts to the Reece Museum between the years 2015 and 2022. |
