Description |
This Bible belonged to Lt. Larkin Junius Curtis (1835-1864). There is a handwritten inscription in the Bible that reads as follows: "This Bible belonged to Lieut. Larkin Junius Curtis, Wilkesboro, NC, Co. B., First North Carolina Regiment of Infantry, State Troops. He carried it in a leather case supported by a strap around his neck. He was killed instantly while leading the regiment in a charge on enemy breastworks at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA on May 10, 1864 by a Minnie ball in the face. By Finley P. Curtis, Butler, Tenn. circa 1930." There are additional handwritten inscriptions on the interior covers of the Bible. The bookmark included in the photographs was donated with the Bible and presumably also belonged to Larkin. There is a note sewn to the back of the bookmark that reads: "Presented to Larkin J. Curtis by a friend." |
