Description |
This is a black dashiki by Sammie L. Nicely that is bleach tie-dyed with yellow screenprints of figures across the front. The print is attributed to "Olujimi." The sleeves are embellished with printed cotton fabric. It is presumed that "Olujimi" is in reference to the artist Kambui Olujimi (b. 1976), who is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist who uses installation, photography, performance, works on paper, video, and more. Olujimi's works often reflect contemporary discourse, mythology, history, social practices, and autonomy. The printed images on this dashiki look similar to figures in Olujimi's painted "Hart Island Crew," which is housed at the Whitney Museum of Art. These approximations have not been confirmed. The artist Olujimi is also referenced in a design used by Sammie to design a birthday celebration T-shirt (2025.008.002). The donor of this dashiki, Martha Alfonso, explained that this dashiki was made and worn by Nicely. It was then given as a gift to Alfonso in the 1990s. |
