Description |
This quilt depicts multi-color triangular baskets positioned within nile green squares against a white background. The pattern is called "Baskets." It is inferred to have been crafted between 1930 and 1940. The quilt was hand-pieced, hand-set, and hand-quilted. There is machine-piecing on the sashing and corner stops. The various patterns of the baskets include shades of green, pink, yellow, purple, and blue. There are thirty 9" pieced blocks of baskets with handles that comprise the central design of the quilt. The handles are machine-sewn and appear to be later additions to the quilt, as their green does not match the nile green borders. (Note that one basket does not have a handle at all.) There is a triple-sashing of 2.75" between the basket blocks. Nine small 2.5" blocks comprise each of the corner stops. The borders are double unpieced borders with four squares at each outer corner of the quilt. Basket quilt patterns originated in the mid-nineteenth century. This quilt beautifully exemplifies a common variation of a basket pattern, while also featuring various colors that are indicative of Depression Era quiltmaking. Such colors include nile green, bubblegum pink, and lilac purple. |
